Come Away
Listen
Story behind the song
I wrote the lyric for "Come Away" during a solo trip to Provincetown, Massachusetts. Standing at the very tip of Cape Cod, where the land gradually dissolves into sand and the Atlantic stretches beyond the horizon, I felt as though I had reached the edge of the world. There was something both beautiful and unsettling about that place. The ocean carried an overwhelming sense of mystery—at once peaceful and immensely powerful. I remember feeling small in the best possible way, aware of something far greater than myself that could never be fully understood. The song grew from that experience. More than an invitation to leave one place for another, "Come Away" became an invitation to step beyond certainty and into wonder. It remains one of the most openly spiritual songs I have written, inspired not by answers, but by the awe that can sometimes be found at the meeting place of land, sea, and sky.
Lyrics
Neptune once spoke to me Whispered a magic spell His words were like a dream That I remember well Prepare to leave your isle Prepare to meet your hell But look to your horizon Beyond this mortal shell Come away, come away Come away, come away Come away now leave the land Take the water's open hand Watch the earth dissolve in sand Let the waves of fortune take you Like a child by the hand Sand dunes and windy highways Brown grass and cold despair Alone and driving sideways Pretending not to care Deep down a frozen tear Breaks free and starts to flow I know not how to feel And so I let it go Come away now leave the land Take the water's open hand Watch the earth dissolve in sand Let the waves of fortune take you Like a child by the hand Come away now leave the land Take the water's open hand Watch the earth dissolve in sand Let the waves of fortune take you Like a child by the hand Come away, come away Leave the land, leave the land
