Independent songwriter, producer, and recording artist
Brent Roberts is the recording name of an independent American songwriter, producer, and recording artist whose work has developed quietly across more than three decades.
His early songwriting began with Shivering Blondes, an unsigned collaboration with Joe "Winston" Rowe. He later formed deepnine and released Flowers on the Dirt Road Home before recording the solo album Paint the Evening Sky in 2007. His last release before returning to music was Brotherton Tribal Song in 2011.
After a long period away from releasing records, Roberts returned in 2026 with Savannah Thinks of Rising and the album Silver Lining.
On the work
Much of his music begins outside the usual boundaries of autobiography. A film character, an old painting, a snowstorm, a myth, a shoreline, a friendship, a piece of history, or a melody that refuses to disappear can remain with him for years before becoming a finished song. Some pieces arrive almost complete. Others take decades to find their final words.
The songs on Silver Lining reflect that long process. Late Spring for Ursula began with a melody written many years before its lyric. Thanksgiving dates to the early 1990s and reflects a period of spiritual exploration. The Lady of Shalott was written in memory of a close friend who died in 1993. Come Away began on a solitary trip to Provincetown, at the edge of Cape Cod where land seems to dissolve into the Atlantic. White As was written during a Maryland snowstorm while Roberts was reading the story of Persephone and Demeter. Lydia's Song began as a wedding gift for a friend and was finally completed more than thirty years later.
What survives loss? What do we carry with us when people and places disappear? How do we remain open to love after experience has changed us?
Across these songs, Roberts returns to a few enduring questions — and to the belief that history, myth, landscape, and art still have things to tell us about being alive now.
Musically, his work draws from electronic production, chamber textures, acoustic instruments, and medieval and world-music colours, with an emphasis on atmosphere, restraint, and emotional depth. The music is intended to create a place the listener can enter for a few minutes — and perhaps experience the world a little differently upon returning.
